Berenson Injury Law has been the annual Presenting Sponsor of the Walk Like MADD since 2012. This is an important event that raises awareness and funds to fight drunk driving. Our personal injury law firm has been dedicated to auto accident recovery for close to 40 years. Because drunk driving is responsible for nearly one-third of accident fatalities and hundreds of thousands of injuries nationwide, drunk driving victims and their families represent a large portion of our practice. This fact has inspired us to do whatever we can to end this totally preventable cause of traffic deaths and injuries.
For this reason, we strongly support Mothers Against Drunk Driving and regularly donate our time and money to this important organization. Mr. Berenson also serves on the North Texas MADD Advisory Board.
Every year, the Fort Worth Walk Like MADD is held morning in the Botanical Gardens on an October Saturday morning, in which the weather always seems to be perfect. Many participants form teams, which may comprise family members, coworkers, student groups or just neighbors banding together.
We will continue to support MADD until drunk driving no longer occurs. Our goal is to successfully guide victims through the legal system to recover the maximum possible damages while taking steps to keep this tragedy from happening to other families.
Walk Like MADD is a yearly event held in more than 90 cities across the country, including nine walks with Texas chapters of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Nationwide, Walk Like MADD raised more than $2.4 million and involved more than 16,000 participants in 2017.
Walk Like MADD raises funds for victims’ services, legislative lobbying and educational campaigns designed to put an end to drunk driving accidents. Clearly the event is a successful fundraiser for this important organization. But, Walk Like MADD is really so much more. Every walk is different but they all share these common themes:
MADD was started in 1980 by Candace Lightner after her 13 year-old daughter Cari was killed by a repeat offender. Cindi Lamb joined months later after her 5 month-old child Laura was left a quadriplegia from a head-on collision with a drunk driver. Other mothers whose children were injured or killed by drunk drivers soon joined. MADD quickly grew into a powerful advocacy organization that has succeeded in reducing drunk driving fatalities. Since 1980, the organization has saved 350,000 lives and prevented untold numbers of horrific injuries.
When MADD started, 50 percent of traffic fatalities were alcohol related. Today, that number is 29 percent. The goal is zero.
