We Sponsor Rufino Mendoza Elementary School

Fourteen years ago, I adopted the Rufino Mendoza Elementary School. I take great pride in supporting such a worthy school. The majority of the students are Hispanic and the school is unfortunately underfunded. The teachers and staff work tirelessly to educate our community’s children.

Everybody knows that the obesity epidemic is a problem in America. Studies have shown that an active lifestyle started during childhood usually leads to a healthy and active lifestyle for the rest of a person’s life. So in addition to the work I do for the school as a whole, because of my love for running marathons, I also decided to sponsor of the Mendoza Running Club. I love seeing the kids enjoy a sport that is so close to my heart.

I sponsored a 5K run as part of the Mendoza Fitness day in April. This is a picture of me cheering on the students during the race.

This is a card I received from the coach of the club with a picture of the 2009 Jingle Bell Run.

Here is a brief history about Mr. Rufino Mendoza and the school from the school’s website.

Rufino Mendoza Sr. is regarded as a pioneer in leading the campaign for Hispanics and addressing the concerns affecting the education of children in the area. Mr. Mendoza began his efforts in 1972 with the Mexican American Educational Advisory Committee where he served as a chairman from 1972-1982.

Mr. Mendoza was instrumental in identifying specific needs of the Hispanic Community in curriculum and instruction, in the bilingual program, in personnel and staff development, and in school policies.

Mr. Mendoza believed in the general principle that every child could learn if given an opportunity. His dedication, devotion, and tireless effort to improve educational opportunities for Hispanic children in the Fort Worth school district is well known and documented.

In recognition of his leadership as spokesman and advocate for quality education for Hispanics, the former Denver Avenue school was renamed after him.

I think Mr. Mendoza was a very important man and the work he did obviously deserves recognition and support.

The Fort Worth ISD recently announced that I am one of the recipients of the Golden Achievement Award for Partnership Excellence for the 2008-2009 school year for my work with Mendoza Elementary. I am honored to have received this award and will continue to support such a worthy school in their continued efforts to educate the children of our community.

This is an excerpt from the press release about the award.

The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) is pleased to announce that 79 community partners earned the Golden Achievement Award for Partnership Excellence for the 2008-2009 school year. Employees from these partnerships have given their time, talent and resources to support strategic activities and programs for students and teachers in the district.

The award was established to give recognition to the partners who made significant contributions to the education of students or the support of teachers. Award winners include businesses, faith-based organizations, higher education, financial institutions, non-profit organizations, and government entities. This is the sixth year that it has been awarded.
