Cyclist Killed By Drunk Hit And Run Driver in McKinney

McKinney police arrested the driver who is accused of hitting a bicyclist at Greenwood Road — and then fleeing the scene.

Steven Miles, 58, a substitute teacher, was flown to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he unfortunately died.

My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

McKinney officers were able to find the vehicle, a red sedan, but not the driver, who had

left his car and fled on foot.

Police later arrested Pedro Mendoza (right), 48, and charged him with intoxicated manslaughter. He was booked into the Collin County Jail under a $100,000 bond.

I have handled many road bike and motorcycle cases over the years where the rider was seriously injured, but but fortunately none were killed. After filing suit, I recently recovered a large sum of money for a man hit by a pickup driver in Hurst, who also fled the scene. And as a 57 year old who runs on the streets of the Metroplex — and used to ride on them to get exercise before I got tired of constantly looking over my shoulder and praying that I wasn’t going to get hit — stories like these make me cringe. Operators of motorcycles and bicyclists have every right to use the roads including riding in a lane of traffic. Of course, they must obey the traffic laws, and I get angry when I see cyclists blow through lights and stop signs.

I was just hired by a woman seriously injured when she was hit by a hit-and-run driver. Fortunately, a witness saw the crash, called police, and followed the driver to her home. The driver was arrested for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. I found a video the defendant posted on YouTube where she talks about several previous drunken nights and arrests that I will use against her at trial.
