Josh Brent went to a club, got drunk, crashed his Mercedes, and killed his best friend and teammate, Jerry Brown, early Saturday morning in Irving.
You would think Brent would have known better. Not just because DWI is wrong, because he had already served jail time in 2009 for DWI while he was playing football with Brown at the University of Illinois. Brent faces an intoxication manslaughter charge and a jail sentence of up to 20 years.
Sound familiar? Cowboys player Dwayne Goodrich went to a strip club, got drunk, and crashed into three men who had stopped to assist a disabled car on the shoulder of I-35 in Dallas in 2003, killing two of the men and seriously injuring the third. Goodrich then fled the scene. He was convicted and served six years in jail.
I was hired several years ago to sue a Dallas Cowboy who crashed his Cadillac SUV into my client at DFW Airport, but the player was not intoxicated.
According to a group I support and greatly admire, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). 10,000 people died — one every 53 minutes — due to DWIs in 2010. Over 1.4 million drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated.
As readers of this blog know, I hate drunk drivers. And there are more DWI – caused deaths here than in any other state and I hate that.
