Burn Injuries

Hollywood crash scenes show a car exploding or catching fire. Although this rarely happens in real life, when it does the consequences are usually catastrophic. While in movies the victim often escapes unscathed, in reality the victim is usually killed or suffers devastating injuries.

Berenson Injury Law has spent 40 years pursuing damages for auto accident victims who sustain the worst imaginable injuries. Our firm is skilled at proving fault and working to recover the maximum damages an injured person is entitled to. As a lifetime member of the prestigious Multi-million Dollar Advocates Forum, attorney Bill Berenson has a proven track record of successful recoveries. In addition to aggressively pursuing damages, we offer our clients guidance, compassion and respect during one of the most difficult experiences in their lives.

Why Do Vehicles Catch Fire?

Modern vehicles are generally built to withstand auto accident conditions without catching fire. However certain crash conditions can result in a car fire. Sometimes the collision punctures the gas tank and a spark ignites the leaking fuel. Also a tractor-trailer may be carrying flammable materials that can be compromised during a violent impact. In Texas, trucks that transport volatile oil from the fields are at particular risk of catching fire in a collision.

Effects of Serious Burns

Burns are classified as first, second and third degree, with third degree being the worst. Each degree of burn penetrates progressively deeper layers of flesh to these extents:

  • First-degree burn causes pain and redness to the outer layer of skin, the epidermis.
  • Second-degree burn damages the epidermis and the dermis, the lower layer of skin, and causes pain, swelling and blistering.
  • Third-degree burn harms the skin and underlying tissues which may include nerves, blood vessels, muscles and soft tissue. Because the burn damages nerves, third-degree burns can result in numbness.

Any amount of third-degree burn is serious. A second-degree burn on hands, feet, face or groin or spread across large areas of flesh is also considered very serious.

The skin controls temperature, maintains fluid balance and protects inner organs from infection, and burns interfere with these important functions. For example, burned skin exposes the patient to bacteria that can lead to sepsis. Also, body temperature and blood pressure may drop dangerously low.

Scar tissue forms over severely burned flesh and may form into raised areas called keloids. Scar tissue that covers joints reduces flexibility and mobility and scarring of muscle fibers can pull joints permanently out of alignment.

Inhalation of smoke may burn airways and lungs creating respiratory difficulties. The toxic fumes of a car or 18-wheeler fire are especially damaging.

Medical Treatment for Serious Burns

Burn patients must often endure numerous painful treatments over many months and sometimes years. Doctors may need to rebuild a severely damaged area of the body through reconstructive surgeries, followed by extensive plastic surgery to enhance appearance. Burn victim treatment may include:

  • Procedures to stabilize the patient’s temperature, blood flow, wound healing and comfort
  • Skin grafts, in which a patch of healthy skin is transplanted to the burn area
  • Microsurgery to reattach the underlying blood vessels, muscles and ligaments
  • Free-flap procedures to transplant muscles, blood vessels and other healthy tissue to the damaged area
  • Tissue expansion, in which the surgeons insert a balloon and stretch the skin to replace the burned area
