Another weekend in DFW and more deadly DFW wrecks occurred, with no end in sight.
Three people died in intoxicated driving collisions in Arlington within only a few hours of each other. (Updated: one of the passengers who was initially reported killed is now listed as being in critical condition at an area hospital.)
Another crash took the lives of two men in Dallas in the early morning hours Sunday.
The first wreck happened in Arlington around 9:30 p.m. when an intoxicated 26-young-man from Killeen was speeding on Calender Road and drove his truck into a tree, causing him to lose his life. Two boys, ages 4 and 5, were also hurt.
Then nearby in Arlington about 2:00 a.m., a drunk 38 year old man was driving south on Matlock Road, hit another car with four people inside, and rammed it into a traffic light pole. Three women were tragically killed. The drunk driver was arrested and charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter.
And in southwest Dallas a few hours later, a 23-year-old man crashed into a tractor-trailer, killing him and his 44-year-old passenger.
My prayers go out to all of the deceased and injured persons and their families.
We Must Stop The Insanity
Week after week, intoxicated drivers are killing themselves, their passengers, and other drivers on our streets and highways. The number of fatalities has increased dramatically. We have to crack down on drunk drivers here in Texas. We have more DWI fatalities here than in any other state, even more than California with 12 million more people.
How many people die in Texas in DWI collisions? A shocking 1,296 people died from these crashes in 2012. This figure increased 7% from the year before. The problem is way out of control.
Professionally, I’ve seen that drunk driving crashes are often the most serious auto and truck accidents. They are often high speed and head-on crashes.
I hate drunk drivers. I’m a proud supporter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and just spoke to victims’ families assembled at the Walk Like MADD as the Presenting Sponsor last week in Fort Worth.
Here are more sobering statistics about drunk driving collisions:
Alcohol-fueled injuries hurt almost 17,000 people in 2012;
There were over 25,000 alcohol-related crashes were over 25,000 that year;
Last year in Tarrant and Dallas Counties, 121 people were killed and 1,261 others were seriously injured by DWI drivers;
Over 90,000 people were arrested for DWIs in 2012;
This costs Texas taxpayers over $6 billion per year.
