A man and a woman from Dallas were tragically killed after their motorcycle collided recently with an 18 wheel truck in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Accounts differ as to the collision’s cause. DPS troopers have said that traffic had stalled due to an overturned tractor-trailer; witnesses claim that the collision came about after the semi-truck suddenly stopped in the middle of the road and did not pull onto the shoulder. The 47-year-old and 27-year-old motorcycle riders died at the scene.

Unfortunately, motorcycle riders are 35 times more likely to be involved in a deadly accident than passengers in a car. In Texas, 460 people died in just in 2012 after being involved in collisions on motorcycles.
It is imperative in motorcycle accidents to determine immediately which driver is at fault. Some motorcycle crashes are caused by the motorcycle rider’s poor behavior or by mechanical problems with the motorcycle. Many others — including those that take a life — are the result of bad decisions by drivers of cars or trucks. Others are a combination of both. I have heard many car and truck drivers say that they never saw the motorcycle before the crash occurred. Often that is because the drivers were too distracted by talking or texting on their phones, or by other devices in their vehicles. Or other times, it may be because the car and truck drivers never expect to see a motorcycle near them, forgetting that motorcycles have as much right to use the road as they do.
The end result is that the motorcycle rider, due to being so much more vulnerable, frequently suffers serious bodily injury or death.
The rider might then file a personal injury lawsuit against the other driver in order to receive much-needed money for medical expenses, income, and other losses. If the motorcycle rider is killed in the accident, his or her estate may choose to bring a wrongful death lawsuit against the car or truck driver.
