30th Anniversary Essay Contest and Scholarship

SMU Scholarship Lawyer Essay.jpgDear Applicants,

As a personal injury lawyer, I have seen how crashes can devastate families. And several students I am representing have even had to drop out of high school or college due to their injuries and financial losses. I hate when that happens.

In order to give back to this wonderful community, as well as to celebrate my 30th anniversary practicing personal injury law in Fort Worth, I am delighted to sponsor a college scholarship contest.

My parents – neither of whom graduated from college until my mother finally did at the age of 70 after taking night classes for 20 years at the University of Texas at San Antonio – taught my family that a college education is invaluable. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to study in the Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin and obtain my law degree from Southern Methodist University. One of my sisters is a doctor, dean and professor at a UT medical school, the other has a graduate degree in education from UT and my brother graduated from Duke. I am delighted that my daughter is studying business at SMU and plans to become a CPA.

I am offering a grand prize $3,000.00 scholarship ($100.00 for each of my 30 years practicing law) to a current or incoming college student or graduating high school senior who will be attending college. Four additional applicants will each receive a $500.00 scholarship. This is the only scholarship program in the United States funded by an individual attorney and is one of the few sponsored by any law firm. Click here to see the Fort Worth Star-Telegram page that mentions the scholarship.

Please click the link below to apply for the scholarship. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2010. A panel of judges representing The Law Offices of William K. Berenson, P.C. will choose a winner by July 30, 2010.

Good luck to all applicants!
